Safety Specialist – MacDonald-Miller

The Safety Specialist is expected to assist in the administration of the Safety Program to maintain a safe and healthy work environment. S/He is expected to meet performance standards set by management and to comply with all policies and procedures. The Safety Specialist reports to the Safety Director.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who can handle multiple projects at the same time in a fast-paced environment and works well independently or on a team. The successful candidate is proactive, a self-starter, possesses strong problem-solving and time management skills, and enjoys interfacing with others.

BRIEF TASK DESCRIPTION

The Safety Specialist possessing the listed knowledge, skills, and abilities is accountable for the following:

  • Promote MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions Safety Program.
  • Distribute and track random drug screening notifications to supervisors.
  • Coordinate safety training programs including creating presentations, presenting both safety and hygiene training.
  • Track employee personal vehicle mileage using a report the Payroll Manager distributes.
  • Evaluate subcontractor paperwork including:
  • Safety manual
    • Weekly safety meetings documentation
    • Weekly safety inspections
    • Daily pre-task plans
  • Assemble Site Safety Manuals when needed (evaluate, modify and distribute).
  • Create specific safety manuals for jobs as requested by sales personnel (requires job write-up).
  • Assist in writing light duty job descriptions.
  • Track and assist in scoring employee driving abstracts.
  • Write Corrective Action Notice forms concerning driving and safety related issues.
  • Create, maintain, and distribute driving safety training opportunities.
  • Maintain department confidentiality.
  • Ensure all SDS files are current and accessible.
  • Ensure complete compliance with Hazardous Communication – Workers Rights to Know.
  • Perform job walks independently and document findings.
  • Independently conducts research to determine appropriate safe work procedures.
  • Attend all required meetings.
  • Understand, accept and support MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions’ Operating Guidelines, Operational Beliefs, and Customer Commitment.
  • Create and present safety training (topics include; fall protection, ladder safety, arc flash, confined space, lockout/tagout, heat stress, asbestos, lead, silica, scaffold awareness, scissor/aerial lift, etc…)
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

The candidate must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Minimum four-year occupational safety/health degree or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or industrial safety experience.
Ability to recognize hazardous situations and suggest corrective measures.
Knowledge of OSHA/WISHA requirements.
Knowledgeable in the following topics: Fall Protection, Confined Space, Trenching and Excavating, Welding Safety, Fire Prevention, Lead/Asbestos Awareness, Lockout/Tagout, Respiratory Protection, Personal Protective Equipment, Ladder Safety, Powder-Actuated Tool Requirements, OSHA 30 Certification.
An understanding of all federal, state, local, and company safety regulations.
Ability to investigate and analyze critical situations in a non-emotional manner.
Strong organizational and analytical skills.
Possess exceptional verbal, written, analytical, persuasion and interpersonal skills.
Sound knowledge of Microsoft Office products, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Previous construction industry experience is a plus.
Ability to accurately and calmly handle multiple priorities with frequent interruptions.
Eager to learn and the ability to work well under pressure.
Ability to consistently set goals, meet deadlines and adapt to flexible responsibilities.
Ability to effectively interact with office personnel, customers, field staff, and management.
Ability to work independently or in a team atmosphere.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORKING REQUIREMENTS

The candidate must possess and be adaptable to the following physical abilities and working conditions:

Ability to see, hear well (either naturally or with correction) and speak clearly.
Coordinate the movement of your eyes, hands, and fingers.
Reach for, handle, use fingers and manipulate objects.
Physical requirements include: standing, bending, climbing, kneeling, driving, and sitting; repetitive motions of hands and wrists.
Ability to participate in job walkthroughs.
Typical working conditions include: working on ladders, in unheated areas and in all weather conditions.
Must be capable of working extended hour days when job/business needs demand.
