The Senior Mechanical Designer will assist Project Managers and Engineers in the production of complete design documents for HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems. The Senior Mechanical Designer will also participate in one or more projects assisting Engineers by performing a variety of tasks, such as the following, and may review or oversee the work of others as appropriate:

  • Support Project Manager and Engineer on projects of all sizes
  • Perform engineering calculations including but not limited to HVAC load calculations, pipe flow analysis, pipe stress analysis, psychometrics, and equipment sizing
  • Select equipment
  • System design and layout
  • May edit specifications for project specific requirements
  • May write reports and other forms of correspondence (e.g., letters, memos, meeting notes, etc.)
  • Responsible for compliance with codes, industry standards and guidelines
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date project information in projects binder including calculations
  • May supervise or review the work of other internal design professionals working on the project to confirm design intent is progressing; assign and schedule work; establish project priorities
  • Coordinate production of CAD drawings; review drawings and verify drawings are accurate
  • May coordinate the mechanical design work with other disciplines (i.e., civil, structural, electrical, acoustical, etc.)
  • May represent Notkin at owner/client meetings and keep meeting notes
  • Report project status regularly to the Project Manager / Engineer (e.g., scope creep, staffing requirements, schedule issues, etc.)
  • Review submittals (e.g., equipment/product, TAB reports and O & M manuals) and shop drawings for compliance with contract documents
  • Prepare Opinion of Probable Construction Cost
  • Respond to RFI’s
  • Respond to bidding phase issues, including addendums
  • Conduct construction site visits and write observation reports
  • Responsible for quality control of their own work prior to submitting it for final quality control review by firm technical leader
  • Review change order proposals
  • May participate in presentations of technical approach for interviews and team project meetings
  • May require travel out of state or within state to visit work sites
  • Other duties as assigned

The successful candidate will have:

  • Two-year technical degree or equivalent experience (minimum)
  • 4-10 years’ recent hands-on experience in the design and selection of mechanical equipment
  • Knowledge and understanding of building codes, industry standards and practices
  • Good communication skills; both verbal and written; ability to effectively communicate technical information with clients and design engineers
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities well
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Proficient computer skills
