HVAC Building System Decarbonization

This webinar will present an introduction to heat pump systems and their impact on the built environment.  We’ll discuss product and system solutions for both comfort heating and domestic hot water applications.

Topics include:

  • Comfort heating heat pump solutions
  • Domestic hot water heat pump solutions
  • Alternative heat sources
  • The role refrigerant plays in decarbonization

Speaker:

Charles Jelen, LEED Green Associate, Decarbonization Program Manager, Trane Charles is the decarbonization program manager based out of La Crosse, Wisconsin.  He has been involved in the development and support of HVAC systems for Trane since 2012.  His areas of expertise are in chilled water systems, refrigerants, system modeling, and decarbonized system designs including the electrification of heating. For the last few years his primary focus has been on the education and best practice for decarbonized building systems.  Activities have included assisting designers in proper application of products into all electric heating systems, providing environmental analysis on carbon equivalent system design, and updating project teams on the embodied impact that HVAC refrigerants have on the environment.  Project scope has ranged in size from a few thousand BTU’s to over a hundred million BTU’s of heating. As a member of ASHRAE Charles has provided many local chapter presentations around the United States.  Typical presentation topics include industry updates on refrigerants, high performance system concepts, and system modeling techniques.  In addition, Charles has provided technical information to thousands of engineers through Trane’s Engineers Newsletter Live series on the topic of decarbonized building systems. Prior to his work at Trane Charles received his BSME from the University of Minnesota.
