For our October 2026 Chapter Meeting, we are doing a joint meeting with ASPE Seattle.

Topic: Designing Central Heat Pump Water Heating Systems: Sizing, Storage, Controls and Commissioning

  • Explanation of System Architecture
  • Separating Demand from Recovery
  • Using Storage Intentionally
  • Designing for Reliability
  • Planning Controls and Sensing
  • Verifying Performance

Session Summary: This session provides an overview of the key design considerations for central heat pump water heating systems, including sizing, storage, controls, and commissioning. Participants will see how building loads and recovery requirements inform equipment selection, and how modular staging and redundancy support reliable operation. The session will also address equipment placement, system monitoring, and practices that help reduce field variability during installation and startup.

Speaker: Albert Rooks and Tom Murgatroyd

Albert Rooks is an entrepreneur and industry leader with more than 25 years of experience bringing sustainable, energy-efficient products and construction solutions to the North American market. His work has focused on expanding access to technologies that improve building performance and support a lower-energy future. Albert’s areas of expertise include high-performance building envelopes, Passive House construction, and central heat pump water heating. As the founder of WaterDrop Systems, he helped introduce North America’s first fully packaged central heat pump water heater for multifamily domestic hot water applications. He has also held long-standing leadership roles in organizations supporting Passive House education and building certification.  Albert also serves as a Provisional Corresponding Member on ASHRAE Technical Committee 6.9 (Thermal Storage).

Tom Murgatroyd is a mechanical engineer at Dynamic H2O, where he supports core product development, production, and customer applications. He has worked in the heat pump water heater industry since earning his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude, from Washington State University in 2019.
