PURPOSE:
The Mechanical Design Engineer supports large projects and leads medium to small projects in the planning, design and construction phases for the Port of Seattle Engineering Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
This list is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
General:
Provide engineering design expertise supporting large projects and leading medium and small projects. Interact with internal clients and customers on technical and nontechnical topics regularly. Prepare and manage project proposals, project design budget, design schedule and oversee the design progress of other design engineers. Provide professional engineering services to other Port departments including inspection of Port facilities, coordinate, schedule and review outside consultant’s work, performing code and engineering analysis and preparation of technical reports. Assign tasks to other team members or request information from them to complete the design of a project. Perform changes to design work based on feedback from other team members.
Design:
Gather design requirements from Project Managers and other stakeholders and synthesize them into a design criteria document. Provide stamped drawings, develop engineering calculations and prepare specifications using analysis and design software, spreadsheets, handbooks, and building codes. Review and comment on the technical accuracy and constructability of designs prepared by in-house engineers and represent the Port reviewing designs created by outside consultants. Perform QA/QC review on Port and consultant developed projects. Develop project construction quantities and cost estimates.
Construction:
Perform construction site visits to observe progress and evaluate quality of materials and workmanship. Review contractor submittals, respond to RFI’s and provide technical advice during construction. Prepare design changes if required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of principles, practices, methods and standards of Mechanical Engineering design and construction of Public Works projects including water distribution and sanitary sewer systems. HVAC and other mechanical systems. Knowledge of latest local, county, state and federal laws, codes and regulations relating to construction activities, stormwater regulations, the environment and various Port of Seattle programs. Knowledge of best practices for construction methods used by building trades for implementation of engineering design. Knowledge of standard drafting design workflows and legal requirements of engineering design documents. Knowledge of engineering disciplines other than one’s own, with a general understanding of the requirements for multidisciplinary engineering design.
Possesses the interpersonal skills needed for mentoring and providing guidance and direction to junior engineers. Exhibits the leadership skills that are necessary for providing direction to a small group of engineering staff to accomplish project objectives. Acts as discipline lead on small to medium sized capital projects. Capable of working fully autonomously, providing definition of root cause, scoping the requirements of the solution, and providing the design documents necessary for completion of the work. Skill in using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, (2016 or newer preferred) software during project development. Experience using Bluebeam software during document review process.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Combination of education and experience demonstrating knowledge, skills and abilities equivalent to:
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field;
Six (6) years of relevant work experience in design engineering; and
Licensed as a Professional Engineer in Washington State.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Six (6) years relevant work experience in design engineering with work focused on airports, seaports or terminals.
