PS ASHRAE September Chapter Meeting

Topic: City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development restructuring Guests: Nathan Torgelson, DPD Deputy Director and Diane Sugimura, Director of Seattle DPD.

First ASHRAE meeting of the year - The Big Meet and Greet!

Our first meeting of the Puget Sound chapter of ASHRAE is going to be an informal introduction and networking program. Our guests are from the City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development Director, Diane Sugimura, and Deputy Director, Nathan Torgelson.

On June 23rd, Mayor Ed Murray issued Executive Order 2015-04: Directing the Creation of a New Executive Office to Coordinate Planning and Implementation to Build Thriving and Equitable Communities. In this executive order, is a restructuring of the City's Department of Planning and Development. Diane and Nathan will explain what this means for the permitting process and Seattle development, where to find more and future information.

Find out what is in store for the future, restructured DPD.  A brief Q&A will follow.

This meeting is a great way to meet the volunteers, board of governors and committee chairs. Come explore ways to get involved in your chapter.

Speaker Bios:

DIANE SUGIMURA is the outgoing Director of the Department of Planning and Development. With more than 35 years with the City of Seattle – including 13 in the variously-named planning offices and projects, and 11 in a primarily regulatory agency, Diane has come full circle.  Since 2002, she has led the agency that combines both – Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development.  The department is responsible for the full-range of development activities from long-range and comprehensive planning, to policy and code development, plan review, permit issuance, inspections and enforcement.

NATHAN TORGELSON has dedicated his two decade career in the public sector to improving the relationship of people and communities to their built environment. Nathan is the Deputy Director of the City of Seattle’s Department of Planning and Development (DPD), and oversees the long range planning and community engagement divisions of the Department.

Nathan has held a variety of other positions at the City of Seattle, including working on community development issues for former Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, working at the Office of Economic Development, and working on Seattle’s waterfront project for Seattle Parks and Recreation.
Nathan also served as the Economic Development Director for four years for the City of Kent.
