Puget Sound ASHRAE December Chapter Meeting: Moving Towards Zero Energy Hospital Buildings

Hospitals are large energy consumers, using two to five times the energy of commercial buildings. And, most of the energy consumption is in the HVAC systems; two-thirds to three quarters of hospital energy is heating, ventilation, and cooling. This presentation covers the details, and step-by-step processes, for the design of HVAC systems which are energy-conscious. It incorporates learnings from a three year California grant-funded research project into advanced hospital energy management, and learnings from ASHRAE & RHEVAs upcoming "Guidebook Towards Zero Energy Hospital Buildings". Travis English (PE, CEM, LEED-AP, MBA) is the National Director of Engineering and Chief Design Engineer for Kaiser Permanente’s (KP) Facilities Strategy Planning & Design group, headquartered in Oakland, CA. Travis is a PE, with BS in Mechanical Engineering from California State Polytechnic University at Pomona and an MBA in Management from California State University, Fullerton. He has 20+ years of experience in design and construction.
